Twice as determined as an energy minister, moving at ten times the speed of an energy bureaucrat, keeping promises more often than a provincial premier – it’s Peak Buster! Our energy superhero is committed to knocking down peak electricity demand to knock out coal, and now you too can take a run at Ontario’s dirty coal-fired power stations.
Come down to Yonge-Dundas Square (Southeast corner of Yonge and Dundas in Toronto) on Tuesday, June 19th (12 noon – 2 pm) and you could get a chance to knock down our giant smokestack and win some great prizes.
Our Peak Busters event is a great chance for you to learn more about what you can do to knock down peak demand to knock out coal. Right now, Ontario uses its dirty coal fired generating station to meet that sharp increase in electricity demand that occurs on hot summer days when our air conditioners are running full out. That means that on some of our worst air quality days, we are ramping up the use of our dirtiest electricity generators, which just makes the whole situation that much worse.
We think busting peak demand to bust coal is a much better idea. By cutting peak electricity demand during the 88 hottest hours of the year, we could eliminate the need to run seven out of eight boilers at the giant Nanticoke coal fired station by 2010. That would be a knockout home run for cleaner air and a big step toward addressing the enormous greenhouse gas emissions of Ontario’s four remaining coal plants.
So come down to Yonge-Dundas Square on Tuesday and have some fun knocking over our giant smokestack, take home a great Peak Buster’s t-shirt and some great information about how you can be an energy superhero!
