Ontario's coal plants are the largest industrial source of greenhouse gas emissions in the province, producing 40% of large industrial emissions. In fact, the giant Nanticoke coal fired plant is the No. 1 source of greenhouse gases in all of Canada. There are no pollution controls that will have any effect on coal plant greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions - in fact, some conventional pollution controls will actually make GHG emissions worse by decreasing efficiency. By replacing coal plants with zero emission renewable sources (wind, hydro, solar), significantly cleaner natural gas-fired generators and by simply decreasing our need for electricity through low cost conservation and demand shifting programs, Ontario could meet 50-70% of its Kyoto Treaty emission reduction targets by 2010.
