Ottawa-Vanier & Niagara West-Glanbrook provincial by-elections
The NDP and Green Party candidates in the Ottawa-Vanier & Niagara West-Glanbrook provincial by-elections are opposed to Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG) proposal to raise the price of its nuclear electricity by 180% to pay for the continued operation of the money-losing Pickering Nuclear Station and the re-building of the Darlington Nuclear Station. The NDP and Green Party candidates are also calling for the closure of the Pickering Nuclear Station in 2018, when its licence expires.
Nathalie Des Rosiers, the Liberal candidate in Ottawa-Vanier, is “undecided” about OPG’s 180% price increase proposal, noting it “will be reviewed independently by the Ontario Energy Board (OEB) – a quasi-judicial board with a mandate to protect rate payers.”
Sam Oosterhoff, the PC candidate in Niagara West-Glanbrook, stated that it “is essential that we, as a province, invest in crucial energy infrastructure to ensure clean, reliable, and affordable power for our province’s consumers for years to come.” According to Andre Marin, the PC candidate in Ottawa-Vanier, “the Ontario PC Party [will] continue to stand up for energy generation that is both affordable and reliable, while providing good paying jobs to families across this province.”
Ms. Des Rosiers and the Green Party candidates support increased electricity trade with Quebec. According to Ms. Des Rosiers, by “continuing to explore additional ways to expand electricity trade we can build a more diverse and reliable energy mix for the people of Ontario.”
Raphael Morin, Green Party candidate in Ottawa-Vanier, and Donna Cridland, Green Party candidate in Niagara West-Glanbrook, are calling for Ontario to seek to negotiate a long-term electricity supply contract for Quebec water power which will allow us to cancel the Darlington Re-Build Project and lower our electricity rates.
Vicky Ringuette, the Liberal candidate in Niagara West-Glanbrook, did not respond to our questionnaire.
