Byelection candidates quizzed on coal-burning station

(Markham) - The Ontario Clean Air Alliance is asking candidates in the Markham by-election to weigh in on the phase out of coal burning at the Nanticoke Generating Station.

The alliance claims the station, located on the north shore of Lake Erie, is Canada's No. 1 source of greenhouse gas emissions.

They want to see coal burning replaced by natural gas by 2009 at the Nanticoke facility.

Doing so would reduce Ontario's total greenhouse gas emissions by one-third of the amount the province needs to achieve compliance with its Kyoto Protocol target for 2010, the group said.

The alliance is asking candidates in the Markham by-election to state their position by Friday.
