Submitted by OCAA on Mon, 01/12/2009 - 05:00.
January 12, 2009 Electricity demand falls, coal exports rise In 2008, Ontario’s total electricity consumption fell by 2.3% and our total coal-fired electricity generation fell by 18% according to statistics released by the Independent Electricity System Operator today. (Their news release may be viewed at http://www.theimo.com/imoweb/media/md_newsitem.asp?newsID=4458). On a less positive note, Ontario’s net electricity exports doubled in 2008. As a result, approximately 47% of Ontario’s coal-fired electricity generation was exported. Please contact Ontario’s Energy Minister George Smitherman and ask him to ban unnecessary and polluting non-emergency coal-fired electricity exports to the U.S.A. Minister Smitherman can be reached at George.Smitherman@ontario.ca, 416-327-6758. Please pass this message on to your friends. Thank you. Jessica Fracassi, Communications & Membership Director |
