November 10, 2010 Andrea Horwath, HST and electricity The leader of the Ontario NDP, Andrea Horwath, is calling on Premier McGuinty to exempt electricity bills from the HST. Ms. Horwath believes that removing the HST from our electricity bills will make life more affordable for you and me. Unfortunately, the real impact of removing the HST will be to encourage people to consume more electricity. Higher demand will increase the need for new high-cost power stations. And new high-cost power stations will lead to higher electricity rates. The only option that can lead to a permanent reduction in our electricity bills is energy efficiency investments that reduce our electricity consumption and reduce our need for new high-cost electricity generating facilities. So to truly protect consumers, the Government of Ontario needs to:
Please email Andrea Horwath (bcc me) and ask her to promote increased spending on energy efficiency, not subsidies that encourage the consumption of dirty coal and high-cost nuclear power. Please pass this message on to your friends. Thank you! Angela Bischoff, Outreach Director
