PC Leadership Candidates and a Nuclear Cost Responsibility Act
On April 30th we wrote to the leadership candidates for the Ontario Progressive Conservative Party to ask them if they support a Nuclear Cost Responsibility Act which would make it illegal for nuclear power companies to pass their capital cost overruns on to Ontario’s electricity consumers and taxpayers.
According to Frank Klees, MPP for Newmarket-Aurora, “Government has the responsibility to ensure taxpayers are protected against cost overruns through provisions incorporated into the agreements between the parties. These are enforceable in law and should be dealt with accordingly.” To read Mr. Klees’ full response please click here.
Christine Elliott, Randy Hillier and Tim Hudak have still not responded to our questionnaire. Please contact Ms. Elliott, Mr. Hillier and Mr. Hudak and ask them if they believe that nuclear power companies should be allowed to pass their capital cost overruns on to Ontario’s electricity consumers and taxpayers. Please remind them that in 2008 Ontario’s electricity consumers and taxpayers had to shell out $2 billion to pay down the nuclear debt of the now defunct Ontario Hydro. And we are on the hook to continue to pay these charges for years to come.
Please pass this message on to your friends.
Thank you for your support.
