Petition to the Legislature of Ontario

Whereas every nuclear project in Ontario’s history has gone massively over budget, on average by two-and-half times;

and whereas Ontario has numerous lower cost and safer options for meeting its electricity needs;

We the undersigned call on the Government of Ontario to:

1. Require that all nuclear projects (repair, re-build or new construction) be competitively tendered on a full-project, all-in, fixed price basis to ensure transparency and eliminate public liability for cost overruns; and
2. Enact a moratorium on the proposed Darlington Nuclear Station Re-Build and New-Build Projects until the Ontario Power Authority (or its successor) has completed a report on the potential to meet our electricity needs using a mix of lower cost and safer options, including. energy conservation and efficiency, made-in-Ontario green power, water power imports from Quebec, and small-scale, high-efficiency natural gas-fired combined heat and power plants.
