Ontario has many lower cost options for meeting its electricity needs than rebuilding old nuclear reactors or building new gas peaker plants. Our revised factsheet demonstrates that the decision to rebuild 10 aging reactors and to continue operating the Pickering Nuclear Plant well past its design life makes little sense. Increasing climate damage by building new gas fired power plants at a time when the rest of the world is moving away from fossil fuels is also a costly mistake. Ontario needs to make smarter choices than relying on an outdated, inflexible and high-cost nuclear-cost power fleet and adopt smarter solutions to meeting our energy needs while reducing our climate impact.
