An Analysis of the Potential for Air Source Heat Pumps to Reduce the Energy Costs and Greenhouse Gas Pollution of Ontario’s Electrically-Heated Homes
This report finds there is a strong financial and environmental case for the installation of air-source heat pumps in homes that currently rely on electric heating (e.g., baseboards or electric furnace). The report also notes that there is a strong correlation between relying on electric heat and energy poverty and finds that conversion to heat pumps is an effective way of reducing this problem. We are calling on the provincial government to embrace the report’s findings by creating a zero down payment, zero interest finance program for heat pump installation in electrically heated homes. This will also be an effective way of scaling up technology that is vital to addressing the climate impact of our homes and buildings.
