The Pickering Nuclear station, one of the oldest nuclear power plants in North America, is scheduled to close in 2024. We asked the leaders of the major Ontario parties where they stood on creating 16,000 jobs by immediately dismantling this ancient nuclear plant after it closes rather than let it sit idle for 30 years.

Immediate dismantling of permanently closed nuclear plants is recommended by the International Atomic Energy Agency.

In January 2020, Pickering City Council unanimously passed a resolution calling for the Pickering Nuclear Station to be dismantled as “expeditiously as possible” after it is shut down.

The NDP and Green Party both indicated that they strongly support immediate dismantling, which will free up a prime 600 acre waterfront site in Pickering for new uses. The PC and Liberal Parties have not responded to our question.

Please ask your local candidates, PC Leader Doug Ford and Liberal Leader Steven Del Duca where they stand on this issue.
