“We switched our propane furnace and hot water over to a ground source heat pump 14 years ago and we haven’t looked back. Almost immediately we found that the steadier operation of the heat pump gave more even heating throughout the house. Over the years, we have witnesses three periods where our neighbours have experienced spikes in the price of propane and once when supplies were running tight. For us, gone are the days of occasionally wondering when the propane truck would show up. The benefits continue into the summer. “The Heat Pump is super quiet (even when you stand beside it it makes barely any noise), temperature control is brilliant and our indoor air quality is so much better than when we had a gas furnace.
Our home is 100% electric. (We have an induction cooktop, electric fireplace and electric water heater. We did need to upgrade our panel to 200 amps before we got going on this transition away from gas in 2020.)
What a relief this has been. And our bills are lower than they would have been if we had continued with gas. People who do not go fully electric need to know that they will still have to pay a monthly fee just to keep the gas hooked up, and that gas is a significant greenhouse gas which is very polluting to produce, i.e. mostly fracking.

The system is very good and we are pleased with it. It is effective down to -25 and also provides us with air conditioning in the summer which we didn’t have before. We turn it off if we don’t use the house in the weeks days and when we turn it on it heats up the house quite quickly. We had electric baseboards previously which was very expensive, so we have saved money overall. We use the fan system in the summer which doesn’t use as much power and cools very well. In the coldest winter days we have to use auxilliary electric baseboard heat but generally only use it in the bathrooms and the kitchen. I believe there is a now way you can turn the system on when you are not there, but it wasn’t available when we purchased the system. Cozy Comfort was very prompt, attentive and knowledgeable. On the downside, the remote controls take some getting used to and are not very intuitive. All in all I’m delighted we have the system and am happy with the cost savings. We also received $5,000 from the Government for the environmental program rebate.

“Dealer rep appeared knowledgeable . Installation was clean and neat. The longer running of a heat pump compared to a gas furnace takes some getting used to. First winter experience suggests increased hydro use is compensated for by reduced gas costs. W-fi connected thermostat is nice feature.
We keep our room temps around 18C. If you are a 22C type or similar, make sure your Heat Pump capacity can handle and reflects your size of home.”

“EXL-Aire , the company that installed our heat pump. Is excellent. We could not fault them in any way. They delivered on time, are professional, local and very knowledgeable. Highly recommended by us.
When we saw the workings of the heat pump parts we realised what a very sophisticated system it is. Our heat pump uses the existing duct system, the only alteration being an enlarged plenum, and it now delivers heat far more evenly and effectively across this whole, rather sprawling home of ours as compared to the previous propane furnace.
We have not yet experienced using the heat pump for a whole winter, but so far, by December 21, 2022, we have not had to use any supplementary heating. We keep the temperature at 20C and it feels warmer than the 21C at which we used to set the thermostat.
The system requires 200amp service.. We did not install a resistance heater, because there wouldn’t have been enough space in the electrify panel for that and our generator. But so far we haven’t needed any back up heating.
In the 12 months leading up to installation of the heat pump our cost for hydro and propane was $6,000.
Our electrify bills alone used to be around $200 a month in cold months before the heat pump.
After installation of the heat pump we saw no difference in the summer hydro bills on the few occasions when we used the heat pump for air conditioning. In October and November with the heat pump, hydro cost an extra $100 a month.. we expect to save a lot.”

“Heat pump installation was smooth and took place in one day. I had to upgrade my electrical service to 200 amp to power it (from the existing 100 amp) which cost an additional $5k. I am now also installing 6.2 KW of grid-tied PV to power the system and I have a solar hot water heater with gas on-demand backup installed already.
So far the system has performed well but we have only had it installed for 2 months and have not yet experienced the cold part of winter (coldest night has been about -5C). Heat is very even without the cycling we had with our gas furnace. The ASHP does not come with a smart thermostat, but rather an old fashion programmable one. Therefore accessing it via the web is not possible so it can not be adjusted when you are not home. Also we are not crazy about fact that it is recommended to keep temperature constant rather than lower it at night (apparently the efficiency is reduced if the temperature setting is varied) as we find the night temperatures to be too high for sleeping comfortably.”

Installation was efficient. The system has provided a comfortable temperature with moister air than a gas furnace would produce. Technical help has been responsive. I have had one hiccup since installation. This happened on the coldest night we have had this winter. There may have been a leak caused by a faulty gasket in the Schrader valve. Otherwise, I am very happy to be completely free of fossil fuels in my house (with the exception of “natural gas” produced electricity. I may need to get off the grid to avoid Ford’s efforts to make electricity more carbon intensive.

Prior to having the ground source heat pump installed our hydro bills in the winter months were regularly in the $700-$800 range (from 2017 bills). We found our home had areas that were quite cold, regardless of the temperature set on the thermostat. We also rarely used our air conditioning as it was far too expensive. After our system was installed, our home had much more consistent heating (less cold spots) and the basement, which used to never get warm, is lovely and warm all year long. The added benefit, which we did not anticipate was the dramatically lower cost to cool our home in the summer months. The savings on our monthly bills has been amazing, we rarely see a bill over $100 in the winter, for a home with 4 adults and 3 children. We have had zero issues with the system, and I estimate we have saved on average about $6000-$7000 per year on home heating costs, so our system paid for itself in less than 5 years. We did take advantage of the rebate program prior to the Ford government removing them.

My elderly father lives on our farm outside of Guelph where he had been paying about $6,000 to $7,000 per year in heating oil and related maintenance costs for his furnace for the last couple of years while having no air conditioning in the home. We installed a geothermal system in the summer of 2021 that was designed and installed by Waterloo Energy Products. This resulted in extra electricity costs of under $1,000 this past winter when, given the price increase for heating oil, we would have likely paid $10,000 in heating oil costs, alone. We also had the added benefit and comfort with air conditioning throughout the entire home as an added bonus from a comfort perspective. While it did require a sizeable upfront investment, we expect that the system will have paid for itself within five years. We qualified for a $5,000 grant from the federal Greener Homes Program and were also eligible for a 10 year interest-free loan from the federal government which meant that our additional annual expenses while we pay back the loan will be about $4,000 to $4,500/yr. but well below the $7,000 to $10,000/yr. that my father would be paying for heating oil. This is all the while saving significant greenhouse gas emissions as per results of the energy audit report after completion of the project: • Energy Savings: 57% • Carbon Emission Savings: 8.3 tonnes/year or 166 tons over the 20 year lifespan of the indoor equipment alone.

In 2020 we were selling our house, but we needed a new furnace before we could list on the market. Gas hook-up was the cheapest option, and the easy way out. But we care too much about protecting the environment and fighting the climate crisis. So despite the extra cost, we spent more money to buy an air source heat pump (the Greener Homes Grant from the government helped with the cost). Right away we saw an unbelievable reduction in our heating and air conditioning bill. It felt amazing to leave our old house ready to combat climate change. And it felt really good to help out the new owners, whomever they may be.

Matt was reliable efficient friendly and very helpful to work with. He did a great job on explaining and deciding on options and install. I would highly recommend him and his company to anyone. He was also the only well informed and experienced heat pump installer in the Kingston area that I could find in 2022. His prices were half that of the equivalent Lennox product. The system has been very successful. It is very quiet. Very consistent heating and cooling. No issues at all with maintaining comfort during very cold snaps. The need for occasional auxiliary heating in the coldest winter days did not lead to significant electrical bills. I prefer its function to our old furnace/ air conditioner systems.
