Like many of you, our holidays have been upended by the resurgence of the COVID-19 crisis. But we will get through it, in part because our governments have embraced the use of every tool in the toolbox, from vaccines and antivirals to masks, capacity limits and supports for people and businesses struggling to adapt and survive.
If only our provincial government took the same approach to a much bigger and more persistent problem: climate change. In the long term, climate change is going to make COVID look like a walk in the park. Staying home will not stop devastating storms, floods or fires.
But the Ford government refuses to take climate change seriously: It has cancelled 750 renewable energy projects, slashed budgets for energy efficiency programs by 60%, and stripped away requirements for installing EV chargers in new buildings while literally ripping chargers out of provincial facilities like GO stations.
Now it wants to ramp up the use of polluting gas fired power plants by more than 600%. It’s hard to think of an action that is more contrary to our interests than this. Pumping out more climate damaging pollution at a time when we have less than a decade to slash greenhouse gas emissions is just crazy.
The Ontario Clean Air Alliance was the first organization to draw attention to this devastating plan to ramp up gas power. We rallied 32 municipal governments to oppose it, and together with you, we forced the province’s energy planners to examine what it would take to phase-out gas-fired power by 2030 instead of ramping it up.
We still have a massive amount of work to do. Our energy planners are stuck in an era before climate change was an issue, and are deeply invested in an old-school electricity system built around a dangerous and polluting combination of nuclear energy and gas-fired power.
We need your help to break the cycle of more nuclear and more gas.
We are in the fight of our lives against the climate crisis. Every dollar you donate to the Ontario Clean Air Alliance will help drive the transition to a 100% renewable energy system in this province.
