The Independent Electricity System Operator is planning to contract for up to 3,500 megawatts of NEW gas-fired generation in the near future. This is the equivalent of building six more Portland Energy Centres, the huge gas plant on the Toronto waterfront.
If the IESO continues to pursue its polluting gas strategy, greenhouse gas emissions from our electricity sector will increase by more than 600%. This will take our province in exactly the wrong direction by making our climate problems worse and leaving us dependent on increasingly expensive imported fracked gas.
Fortunately, we have better solutions, including restoring programs to pursue cost effective energy efficiency, taking advantage of the huge drop in the cost of renewable energy, and cooperating with energy-rich Quebec.
Please remind Premier Ford of his election commitment to move Ontario to a zero-carbon electricity system and tell him and your MPP to direct the IESO to get rid of gas.
