On Sept. 19th, Thorold City Council unanimously rejected a proposal by Northland Power to build a polluting gas plant in their community. The Ford Government claims that it will respect the wishes of municipalities when it comes to developing gas power projects. So what will Energy Minister Todd Smith do now?

Will the minister finally respect a municipal decision? He has turned a deaf ear to the two resolutions passed by the City of Toronto opposing expansion of the Portlands Gas Plant on the city’s waterfront. In fact, the Ford government remains determined to massively ramp up gas burning by more than 300% by 2030.

Thorold Council has done the right thing. It has stood up to corporate interests pushing dirty power, and listened to its citizens instead. Will the Ford Government do the same?
