Doug Ford is planning to meet Toronto’s electricity needs by building four new first-of-their-kind U.S. (GE-Hitachi) nuclear reactors near Oshawa and a new transmission line to bring this power to downtown Toronto.

Ford’s plan will:

  • raise our electricity bills by favouring the highest cost and riskiest approach to meeting our growing electricity needs, and
  • jeopardize our national security by making us dependent on enriched uranium imports from the U.S. – imports that can be shut down at a moment’s notice by President Trump.

Doug Ford’s plan will push nuclear to 75% of Ontario’s electricity mix by 2050 – up from 48.5% last year – while shrinking increasingly low-cost renewables from 35% to just 25%.

In July, we asked Marit Stiles (NDP Leader) and Bonnie Crombie (Liberal Leader) if they support Doug Ford’s plan. They still haven’t answered our simple question.

It’s time for some answers. Toronto’s NDP and Liberal MPPs need to answer the question: Do you support Doug Ford’s plan to build new U.S. nuclear reactors? Or do you support an affordable, renewable electricity future for Toronto?
