The Ford government has directed the Independent Electricity Operator to gift Bruce Power a multi-million dollar subsidy for its $300 million pre-development budget for a new nuclear station.
This is a massive waste of our money, especially since solar and wind can meet our needs at less than one-third the cost of new nuclear – in a fraction of the time. While costs for wind, solar and batteries continue to plunge, costs for nuclear just spiral upwards.
Despite claims that “new nuclear” will be different, we are already seeing the same old story – eye watering costs and massive subsidies.
Nuclear is yesterday’s technology. No other place in the world is trying to meet 75% of its electricity from high-cost nuclear power.
New dynamic, smart systems built around low-cost renewable energy can provide cost competitive power to industries, businesses and residents. Instead, this province is on a road to building the highest cost and least flexible electricity system possible.
