Triple Renewable Energy, Lower Electricity Bills

Affordable electricity is essential to Canada’s economic competitiveness, energy security, and sovereignty. That’s the conclusion of the Government of Canada’s National Electricity Strategy.

Yet despite this, the Carney government is backing Doug Ford’s plan to build a new generation of high-cost, slow-to-deploy nuclear reactors.

The result? Higher electricity bills, reduced industrial competitiveness, and a longer reliance on energy imports from the United States.

A Lower-Cost Alternative Already Exists

Fortunately, Ontario has a better option.

The Ontario government’s most recent competitive electricity procurement demonstrated that wind and solar power can deliver new electricity supply at less than one-third the cost of new nuclear generation.

At a time when families and businesses are already struggling with rising costs, Ontario should be investing in the most affordable sources of new electricity, not the most expensive.

Stop the $400 Billion Nuclear Gamble

Instead of signing more secret, backroom, sole-source deals with OPG and Bruce Power for new nuclear projects that could cost Ontarians up to $400 billion, Ontario can lower electricity costs and strengthen energy security by rapidly expanding renewable energy.

Renewable energy projects can be built faster, cost less, and reduce our dependence on imported energy while creating jobs across the province.

Our Six-Point Plan for Lower Bills and Greater Energy Security

Our new report, It’s Time to Triple Ontario’s Renewable Energy, outlines a practical six-point plan to:

  • Triple Ontario’s renewable electricity supply by 2050
  • Lower electricity bills
  • Increase Ontario’s energy independence and security
  • Create good jobs in communities across the province
  • Improve economic competitiveness
  • Build a cleaner, more affordable electricity system
