Instead of spending $32,000 per customer to subsidize the expansion of the Enbridge gas pipeline system, we should be spending this money on helping low-income households improve their energy efficiency and install heat pumps.

The Save On Energy program‘s commitment to providing low-income households reliant on electric heat with a free heat pump is a good first step. But there is no logic to restricting this support to only homes using electricity for heating. This program should be extended to low-income homes using propane, fuel oil and gas as well.

Spending hundreds of millions of public dollars to subsidize the burning of fossil fuels in the midst of a climate crisis makes zero sense. Spending money to help families lower their energy bills and climate impacts by installing heat pumps does.
