The Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) has given Ontario Power Generation (OPG) a $2.2 billion contract to build a new gas peaker plant in Napanee. This plant is a hugely expensive and climate wrecking way to deal with short periods of peak electricity demand.
Programs that provide incentives to reduce or shift electricity use during peak periods can cost 60-90% less than power from this polluting peaker plant.
We need a full value-for-money audit of the IESO’s decision to award this contract, including an examination of lower cost and lower emission alternatives.
