Wind and solar power are now the lowest cost ways of keeping the lights on in Ontario. These zero carbon energy sources can also help us meet our critical climate targets.
But the Ford government is ideologically opposed to green energy and, as a result, this province hasn’t contracted for a single kilowatt-hour of wind or solar power in the last five years.
Instead, the Ford government wants to dramatically ramp up use of polluting gas and roll the dice on high cost, risky nuclear projects. This approach will lead to soaring electricity costs for Ontario residents and businesses, and will ensure the province continues to miss out on the global green energy boom.
Fortunately, Ontario has a huge untapped renewable energy potential. For example, Great Lakes wind power alone could meet more than 100% of our electricity needs.
It is time for the government to switch tracks and start investing in low-cost wind and solar energy instead of pursuing backroom deals for high-cost, unproven nuclear technologies + gas that cannot effectively address the climate crisis.
