The NDP and the Green Party are asking Ontario’s Auditor-General to conduct a value-for-money audit of the Independent Electricity System Operator’s (IESO’s) $2.2 billion contract for a proposed new 430-megawatt gas-fired peaker plant in Napanee.
This contract with Ontario Power Generation (OPG) represents a hugely expensive and outdated way to deal with short-lived spikes in power demand on hot summer days. Burning more fossil gas on such days also adds to air pollution and climate damage.
In our letter to the Auditor General, we outline many better ways to reduce or address spikes in electricity demand at a much lower cost – financially and environmentally.
What you can do
Please contact Ontario’s Auditor General and ask her to perform a value-for-money audit of the IESO’s $2.2 billion contract for OPG’s proposed new gas-fired peaker plant.
