The Ontario Government needs to scale up renewable energy, including wind and solar, and rapidly phase out polluting gas-fired electricity plants including the dirty Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) in south-east Toronto.
The Portlands Energy Centre (PEC) in south-east Toronto is the largest single source of nitrogen oxides in Toronto, a significant health risk for Toronto residents.
PEC is the biggest single emitter of greenhouse gases in the city. Its ongoing operation and proposed capacity expansion undermine the City’s TransformTO goal of net-zero by 2040.
The impact of greenhouse-gas driven climate change can be seen in Canada and globally including increased flooding, heat domes, unnaturally extreme weather, and forest fires.
Renewable energy costs less to build and produce than other forms of generation.
The provincial government’s recently released energy plan (October 2024) proposes ongoing use of fossil (methane) gas while shunning renewables, meaning that Ontario will continue to be part of the climate change problem.
