Lake America. How annoying is that?
But it’s going to take more than a sign to respond effectively to this provocation from Donald Trump. In fact, we should turn this insult into a huge opportunity to strengthen our energy sovereignty.
Instead of spending billions of dollars on American designed nuclear reactors, as Doug Ford is currently planning to do, let’s send an effective message by building offshore wind power on our side of the Great Lakes.
This is no time to make Ontario dependent on imports of American technology and enriched uranium. This is the time to build renewable in our own backyard – including in Lake Ontario.
Offshore wind is a powerful answer
Offshore wind in Lake Ontario could:
- Provide large amounts of affordable, renewable electricity
- Use Canadian steel and create jobs for Ontario workers
- Supply power close to Toronto, where electricity demand is greatest
- Help phase out the polluting Portlands gas plant
- Reduce our dependence on imported American gas, nuclear technology and enriched uranium
- Produce electricity for less than half the cost of new American nuclear reactors
And, oh yeah, annoy the hell out of Donald Trump who has his head buried in the sand when it comes to the renewable energy revolution sweeping the world. We can create a new powerhouse industry in Canadian waters while the U.S. president golfs and tweets.
Let’s fly our flag high by ditching American nuclear technology and fuel and creating our own climate safe, low-cost renewable power system on Ontario shores and in Ontario waters.
