Once again, the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) has put the interests of the nuclear industry ahead of the safety of Canadians. Its baffling decision to rubber stamp Ontario Power Generation’s completely unacceptable plan to move highly radioactive waste closer to Lake Ontario is head shaking.
But the CNSC never stands up to the nuclear industry it is supposed to regulate. It has approved every application that it has received from our nuclear electricity utilities.
Meanwhile, our Prime Minister is busy promoting the costliest and slowest climate solution available – new unproven nuclear reactors – without explaining what he will do with the deadly waste they produce. And if the Prime Minister thinks this waste is going into some mythical underground hole, he hasn’t been paying attention to what Indigenous peoples and northerners are telling him.
Please tell the Prime Minister and the cabinet minister responsible for nuclear safety, that the toothless CNSC approach is unacceptable. If they really believe nuclear power is a viable climate solution, then they should be ready to demand real world-class safety standards – not rubber stamping dangerous plans.
