Ontario Power Generation (OPG) wants the Town of Greater Napanee to accept another giant polluting gas plant.

Napanee is already home to two of Ontario’s largest gas-fired power plants, including a plant that was shifted here after being opposed by GTA residents.

Building another massive gas plant in a small community that is already the site of more than one-quarter of Ontario’s total gas-fired generation capacity is a terrible idea. No community should be asked to take on the pollution and climate damage burden that OPG thinks Napanee should accept, in exchange for a $4.8 million dollar inducement.

We have many cleaner and lower-cost ways to meet peak summer electricity demand, including energy efficiency, renewable energy and more waterpower imports from Quebec. Paying communities to accept more pollution is not what our publicly-owned utility should be doing.
