The Liberal, NDP, and Green candidates in the Toronto-St. Paul’s federal by-election are all calling for the Government of Canada to establish Clean Electricity Regulations that will require Ontario’s electricity grid to be net zero-carbon by 2035.
The Conservative candidate, Don Stewart, has not responded to our questionnaire.
A net-zero electricity system has never been more important – or achievable. We need to electrify transportation, buildings and industry to have any hope of curtailing runaway climate change and immense climate damage. But right now, Ontario is planning to keep burning polluting fossil gas until 2050 for electricity generation.
Send a message to Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre and St. Paul’s Conservative Candidate Don Stewart demanding an answer to this vital question: Will the Conservative Party work to create a high efficiency, low cost, net zero-carbon electricity system for Ontario by 2035 or not?
Background Information
During the 2021 federal election, Prime Minister Trudeau promised to establish Clean Electricity Regulations that would lead to a net zero-carbon Canadian electricity grid by 2035.
Unfortunately, the Government of Canada’s draft Clean Electricity Regulations would permit the carbon emissions of Ontario’s gas-fired power plants to be at least three times greater than their 2017 level in 2035.
In December 2023 at the Climate Summit in Dubai, 198 governments (including Canada’s) pledged to triple the world’s renewable electricity by 2030 and double its energy efficiency.
