Despite claims by Ontario’s Energy Minister Stephen Lecce that the Darlington Nuclear Refurbishment Project has been completed “on time and on budget”, Ontario Power Generation’s (OPG’s) filings with the Ontario Energy Board show that it will be at least 25% over budget. In addition, according to OPG, the refurbishment won’t be fully completed until July 2032.

What we now know to be true is that every single major nuclear project in Ontario’s history has gone over budget — including this one.

It’s time to shift to renewable energy projects that are cleaner, safer and much lower cost. Offshore wind in our Great Lakes, large new solar farms on OPG lands in Port Hope, Nanticoke and Lambton County, and expanded storage are all much safer bets than new nuclear.

Tell Energy Minister Stephen Lecce that we need to invest in renewables and energy storage not new nuclear to make electricity more affordable for Ontario’s families and businesses. >>
