Questions You Should Ask Byelection Candidates

The upcoming provincial byelections are a chance to ask candidates important questions about our energy and climate future. This is an opportunity to hear if candidates understand the ways in which our world is changing and how the future of energy is being reshaped. It is also a chance to see if they have a clear plan for vital climate action.

Here are some questions you might want to ask them:

• Do you support tripling Ontario’s supply of low cost renewable energy by 2050?
• Do you think providing public subsidies for nuclear projects is a good bet given the long history of cost overruns and delays on nuclear projects?
• Are you aware that 90% of the world’s new electricity generation capacity installed in 2025 was renewable, mostly solar and wind?  That the cost of batteries has fallen massively and costs for wind and solar continue to decline?
• Do you believe we need to move quickly to reduce climate damaging emissions and therefore should rely on off-the-shelf and ready to deploy renewables instead of slow and cumbersome nuclear generation projects?
• Do you think if makes sense to build reactors that will require us to import enriched uranium from the United States?
• Do you think we should tap the powerful winds blowing across the Great Lakes and join the worldwide surge in offshore wind generation?
