The federal government’s revised draft Clean Electricity Regulations contain many large loopholes that will allow greenhouse gas emissions from Ontario’s gas-fired power plants in 2035 to exceed 2017 levels by 3 times.
This is the wrong direction to be taking in regulations that were supposed to lead to a net zero-carbon electricity system by 2035. Fortunately, Ontario can eliminate the need for gas burning by 2035 by tripling its use of low-cost solar and wind power.
