As reported in the Globe and Mail, six of Ontario’s municipally-owned electric utilities are supporting Electricity Canada’s campaign opposing federal Clean Electricity Regulations to phase-out dirty gas power.
Five of these utilities (Toronto Hydro, Hydro Ottawa, Alectra, Oakville Hydro and Kingston Hydro) are owned by municipalities that have passed resolutions calling for the phase-out of gas power by 2030 or as soon as possible.
While Electricity Canada’s campaign is in the financial self-interest of its fossil fuel utility members (e.g., Ontario Power Generation, TC Energy, Capital Power, Atco, Epcor, Fortis, SaskPower) it is not in the best interests of Ontario’s electricity consumers and our climate since we can phase-out gas power by 2035 and lower our electricity bills by tripling our wind and solar energy.
What you can do
During the 2021 federal election, Prime Minister Trudeau promised to establish Clean Electricity Regulations that would move Canada to a 100% net-zero emitting electricity grid by 2035.
Please contact the Mayors of Toronto, Ottawa, Mississauga, Hamilton, St. Catharines, Barrie, Guelph, Oakville and Kingston and ask them to direct their utilities to support federal Clean Electricity Regulations that will phase-out Ontario’s gas plants by 2035 (except for emergency back-up).
