There has never been a better time to help people reduce costs. Instead, the Ford government seems determined to drive up energy bills by choosing the highest cost options available to keep the lights on. That these are also the most climate damaging adds insult to injury.
The government’s preferred nuclear/gas electricity generation mix is archaic. Today, we have so many better options for keeping our lights on. One of the best is exploiting the winds that are almost constantly blowing across the four Great Lakes that border Ontario.
When you asked Doug Ford to lift the decade-old moratorium on wind power development in the Great Lakes, he didn’t bother to reply. No explanation of why the moratorium was needed was offered. No details of why Ontario would turn up its nose at an energy source that is 40% cheaper than new nuclear, and would help us cut electricity sector greenhouse gas emissions instead of increasing them by 700% as the government is on track to do.
As usual, it would seem the Premier is only listening to those who will make a mighty buck from his misguided decisions. Ontario Power Generation (OPG) and Bruce Power have huge financial interests in both nuclear and fossil gas (with OPG owning five of Ontario’s biggest gas plants, and Bruce Power partially owned by gas giant TC Energy), which helps explain why the Premier doesn’t want to consider offshore wind. He clearly does not want to rock the boat for these huge companies.
We need to get the word out about how the Ford government is ignoring the interests of Ontarians, and instead listening to companies that are just interested in protecting their profits. We need your help to launch a major campaign to draw attention to the fact that offshore wind power could meet all of Ontario’s electricity needs – a far better option for our wallets and our climate than the nuclear/gas tag team. Your support can help us with everything from social media ads and pamphlets to building municipal and citizen support for offshore wind.
Here’s the best part: We have two generous donors, the M.H. Brigham Foundation and an anonymous donor, who will match all the donations we receive up to $30,000. That means every dollar you donate to help us spread the word about the Ford government’s refusal to consider climate friendly energy solutions will be instantly doubled. Last week we raised $7,040 but we need to raise an additional $22,960 to meet our target.
The Ontario Clean Air Alliance is a lean, tenacious fighting machine and we will not rest until the pointless moratorium on offshore wind has been lifted and solutions that can address our climate crisis today – like solar, energy efficiency, and smart EV charging – are put on a level playing field with costly, outdated and slow solutions like gas peaker plants and new nuclear.
But we can’t do it without resources. Your donations are the spark we need to move Ontario onto a 100% renewable energy path.
Please make a donation today so we can blow away the government’s old school thinking and usher in a new climate friendly era for energy in Ontario.
Thank you in advance – your donations, large and small, keep our doors open!
