Wind and solar, not gas and new nuclear

Instead of focusing on low-cost renewable energy and energy efficiency, Ontario is planning to build new high-cost nuclear reactors at Darlington, Port Hope and in Bruce County while ramping up the pollution from its dirty gas plants by more than 500%.

We need to tell Ontario Energy Minister Stephen Lecce that his high-cost, high-carbon energy plan will increase pollution and our energy bills.

Our plan calls for Ontario to phase-out gas power by 2035 by tripling our wind and solar power, and by investing in energy efficiency and storage.

Minister Lecce can start by taking these three actions:

1. Rescind the moratorium on Great Lakes wind power, which has the potential to meet 100% of our electricity needs;

2. Use OPG’s Port Hope generating station site to connect Lake Ontario offshore wind power to Hydro One’s high-voltage transmission grid; and

3. Pay families and businesses (e.g., large parking lot owners) to provide rooftop solar power to Ontario’s electricity grid.
