This weekend, we lost a clean air and climate champion with the passing of former Mississauga Mayor Hazel McCallion.
Mayor McCallion was a key ally in our campaign to phase-out dirty coal power and had the vision to see that we all would be better off without the giant Lakeview coal plant spewing pollution on Mississauga’s waterfront. Thanks to her determined advocacy for cleaner air, the provincial government agreed to close Lakeview as a first step in getting rid of all five of Ontario’s dirty coal plants.
Hazel led the way as always, and no one at Queen’s Park was going to ignore this clean air Hurricane. You can read more about our campaign to phase out dirty coal and Hazel’s key role in our look back at our campaign to phase-out coal.

Winter has arrived in Ontario and the southern half of the province is going to finally experience some real winter cold this week. So this is a great time to look at how extracting heat from the ground (or water) can be a highly efficient and cost effective way to heat your home.
This Wednesday (Feb. 1st) at 7 p.m., we are going to have a number of experts on hand for a webinar to explain the advantages of ground-source heat pump systems. Heather McDiarmid from McDiarmid Climate Consulting will look at the dollars and sense of ground source systems, which represent one of the most cost-effective renewable technologies for heating and cooling on the market. Jeff Hunter of Evolved Thermal Energy, a seasoned pro in the business of installing ground-source systems, will explain more about how they work and what’s involved in setting up the loops that gather that heat from the ground. We will also have a group of three industry experts on hand to answer your online questions live.
As Heather’s report for the OCAA makes clear, if you rely on oil, propane or conventional electric systems for heating, a ground source system is a financial slam dunk. If your community is being targeted for Enbridge’s costly new gas service, it is also a far better choice. And even if you are connected to gas, ground source is a better option for your wallet and the climate. Ground source systems are well established technology that can provide even greater efficiencies, especially in deep cold, than air-source systems. So find out if ground source is a fit for you this Wednesday.

P.S. We also have a growing number of testimonials for air source heat pump users that can show how effective that technology is too!
