Installing a heat pump is looking very attractive with new incentives and a coming surge in fossil gas prices. But by choosing a heat pump with a high efficiency rating, you can save even more.
Ontario’s Home Renovations Savings Program (a joint venture of Enbridge Gas, Save on Energy, and the Government of Ontario) is now offering rebates that can save you up to $2,500 on the purchase of an air-source heat pump and a heat pump water heater if you currently use gas, and up to $7,500 for an air-source heat pump if your home currently uses electric heat.
By choosing a heat pump that performs better than the program’s minimum efficiency standard (HSPF2 Region V rating of 6.6) you can save even more. A heat pump with a 10.5 rating will, for example, cut electricity consumption for home heating by close to 40% compared to a model with a 6.6 rating.
With Enbridge Gas requesting a 25% increase in what it charges for fossil gas, this is a great time to switch from polluting gas to a heat pump that can efficiently heat and cool your home at all temperatures.
You might also want to reduce or eliminate your family’s dependence on American gas given the current political turmoil. According to Enbridge, more than 70% of the gas used in Ontario is imported from the United States.
