Shannon Devine (NDP) and Bruce Livesey (Green), candidates in the Beaches-East York federal by-election, are calling on the federal government to help triple Ontario’s renewable energy by 2050 to lower electricity bills, strengthen energy security, phase out polluting gas power and create good jobs.

Tanveer Shahnawaz (Liberal) and Jim Syrbos (Conservative) have not yet responded.

Why should the federal government support more renewable energy?

Ontario’s reliance on polluting gas power is growing. In 2025, fossil gas produced 19.4% of Ontario’s electricity, up from just 4% in 2017. By 2030, that could rise to 25%, according to Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator.

Meanwhile, more than 70% of our gas is imported from the U.S., leaving Ontario vulnerable to rising prices and supply disruptions.

Wind and solar can be built in just 6 to 24 months and are our lowest-cost sources of new electricity, making them our quickest options for phasing out gas power.

By tripling renewable energy, Ontario can lower electricity bills, strengthen energy security, and avoid spending $400 billion on new nuclear projects, including the world’s largest nuclear station in Port Hope.
