Ontario has finally taken a step to enter the 21st century energy race with its first procurement of new solar and wind energy since the Ford government took office.
The province’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) announced yesterday that it has offered 20-year contracts to 14 new renewable energy proposals comprised of 12 solar projects and 2 wind farms. Kudos!
The average price of power from these renewable energy projects is 8.8 cents per kWh.
So the cost of power from these zero emission renewable projects will be 60% lower than Ontario Power Generation’s proposed price for nuclear energy in 2027 (21.4 cents per kWh). And up to 73% lower than the cost of power from its new GE-Hitachi nuclear reactors at Darlington (32.2 cents per kWh).
There is a clear real-world lesson here about how much we can save by choosing quick-to-deploy solar and wind energy instead of expensive and cumbersome nuclear. Solar and wind combined with energy storage can deliver reliable energy at a lower cost with good jobs – right now.
